O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while he was still in highschool. She was able to advance to the top ten spots because of the enthusiasm shown by judges in the performance. O'Neil was given high marks from the panel of judges. But she was a victim of major defeats in the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed in the bottom three, as well as the in the bottom two. This shocked the judges, and they recommended that people vote for Melissa who was one of the contestants with the greatest ability to sing. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she didn't even make it to the lower three in the future. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
